The Importance of Communication with Your Registered Massage Therapist

The Importance of Communication with Your Registered Massage Therapist

A man getting a shoulder massage.

Written by Bill Richardson, RMT

When receiving a massage in Vernon BC, it's important to be aware of how you are responding to treatment. It's very helpful for the RMT to understand how you are doing. Telling your RMT if the pressure is too firm or too light will simply help make for a better result. Often clients are worried about speaking up about the treatment, but a good RMT will be happy to alter the treatment to make it a safer, more comfortable experience.

Some common requests that can improve your experience are:

  • Music type or volume
  • Temperature
  • Reduced conversation after a long day
  • Bathroom break mid-treatment
  • Water for a tickling cough.

This is your time to recharge or recover and the little things can help your improvement.

An RMT will have basic safety check-ins throughout the massage. I often sum it up with this little statement: "I am the brains, you're the boss. I am going to tell you what I think needs to happen. However, you are going to tell me if it happens or not. Ultimately, it's your choice."

It's your health and well-being. Speaking up is a great step to a better, healthier you.
