Concussions and the Spine

Concussions and the Spine

A woman holding her head in pain.

Written by Dr. Keegan Johnston, DC ~ Vernon BC Chiropractor

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head, or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.

If there is enough physical trauma to agitate the brain, there is definitely enough trauma to injure the neck. Concussion trauma can alter the posture or position of your spine. When your spine shifts out from its good posture, it can produce many concussion-like symptoms such as balance problems or dizziness, confusion, headaches, nausea, sleep problems or slowed reaction time. If you or a loved one has suffered a concussion in Vernon or is experiencing concussion-like symptoms, be sure to get your spine checked!
