How Important Is Posture?

Chiropractic Vernon BC Neck Pain

By Dr. James Mayne, DC ~ Vernon Chiropractor

An interesting read in the Canadian Journal of Pain Management came across my desk the other day, outlining the effects of posture on a person's health. While the focus of the study was quite specialized, the message was well written, and I wanted to sum up the parts that were relevant to chiropractic care.

The basic idea of this article is that poor posture will affect the structure of the spine. The supportive structure of the spine fails when the curves of the neck and back are not in their optimal position due to bad habits, such as slouching or looking down at our phones. Other problems we develop through injuries, or we are born with. These lead to some of the most common spinal problems we see, such as forward head carriage, scoliosis, a rotated pelvis, or a swayback spine.

This Journal of Pain Management study notes that poor posture will put stress and tension on our bodies and interfere with muscle function, sensation, and bone development. Postural stress on these tissues creates what the authors call “stress illness”, which can lead to many health problems.

The “stress illness” health issues that this article mentions are spinal pain, headaches, mood issues (depression), breathing difficulties, and blood pressure issues. As chiropractors, our job is to align the body and improve posture. This article explains that therapies that reduce the stress on the spine and the nervous system decrease pain and improve mood. Less pain and better moods lead to happier and more active lifestyles, something we all want!

If you think your posture and pain are inhibiting your mood and lifestyle, please come in for a check-up to see how we can help. Our goal is to keep everyone active and able to enjoy the wonderful recreational areas here in the Okanagan!
